Privacy Policy

In short

Speedometer reads your GPS location only while you're recording a trip (or briefly during setup, to confirm GPS works) — never silently in the background.
Your trips, routes, and settings are stored only on your device. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with advertisers.
If you export a trip as a CSV file, that's your action, sent wherever you choose in the share sheet.
You can delete any trip, or all trip data, at any time from within the app.
The app uses Google Firebase for crash reporting, basic usage analytics, and optional notifications — see Firebase services below for exactly what that includes.

What this app is

Speedometer turns your phone's GPS into a car- or bike-style instrument cluster: a live speed readout, an analog gauge with a trip odometer, and a trip recorder that tracks distance, moving time, and average/max speed for rides you choose to record. It also supports Android Auto, so the same live readout can appear on your car's display.

This policy explains what data the app touches, why, and what control you have over it.

Location data

The app requests precise location (GPS) access. It is used only:

While a trip is actively being recorded (including while paused mid-trip), to calculate your live speed, distance, and route.
Briefly during first-time setup, to confirm GPS is working before you start your first trip — that fix is shown on screen and immediately discarded, never saved.
While a live speed readout is visible on screen — the Dashboard, the heads-up display mode, or the Android Auto car screen.

The app does not request background location access, and does not track your location when no trip is active and no live readout is on screen. Recording continues while your phone is locked or the app is in the background only because a trip is running, via a persistent notification you can see and stop at any time — never silently. Your location and route are never included in analytics events or crash reports.

What's stored, and where

Everything below lives in a local database and settings file on your device only.

None of this is linked to your name or an account — the app has no sign-in and no user accounts at all.

Your controls

Export a trip — writes a CSV file and opens your device's share sheet. It goes only where you send it; the app never uploads it.
Delete a trip — permanently removes that trip and its route from your device.
Delete all trip data — one tap in Settings, with a confirmation step.
Turn off analytics — a toggle in Settings lets you opt out of usage analytics at any time; crash reporting continues so we can keep fixing bugs.
Revoke location access — from the app's Settings, or your device's system settings, at any time.
Uninstall the app — removes every trip, route, and preference immediately; nothing is kept anywhere else on your device.

Firebase services

The app uses a small set of Google Firebase services to stay reliable and keep you informed. None of these ever include your location, route, or trip content.

Crash and freeze reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)

Automatically reports crashes and app freezes so problems can be fixed. A report can include:

The stack trace and thread that crashed
App version and build identifiers
Basic device info: model, OS version, locale, free memory/storage, battery state
A Firebase-generated installation identifier, used only to group crashes by install

Usage analytics (Firebase Analytics)

Helps us understand which features are actually used, so we spend effort where it matters. Events are things like "trip started," "gauge theme changed," or a screen being viewed — never the GPS data itself. You can turn this off any time in Settings without losing any app functionality.

Notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)

Used only for occasional, optional messages from us — for example, letting you know about a new feature. We don't have your location, contacts, or any personal identifier to target these with; they go out to whoever has the app installed and notifications enabled. You can disable notifications entirely in your device's system settings at any time.

These three Firebase services are provided to us by Google under Google's own data-processing terms; we don't sell this data or use it for third-party advertising.

Children's privacy

This app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13 (or the relevant age of consent in your region). Given the app requires precise location and no accounts exist to verify age, it is intended for general/driving-age audiences.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "Effective" date at the top will be updated. Material changes (for example, adding a new kind of data collection) will also be reflected in the app's own Settings screen where practical.
